The Etymology of Almaida

It could just be a corruption of Quenya Charles Alexander Thomas (talk) 15:51, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Map?

Is the "single sketch-map of Númenor" available somewhere? Smeagol (talk) 22:43, 22 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm intrigued as to what you're referring to? IvarTheBoneless (talk) 09:34, 23 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, the reference in the article, of course. Smeagol (talk) 12:22, 23 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Which one? IvarTheBoneless (talk) 13:16, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is only one reference to a "single sketch-map of Númenor". That is the one I want to know more about. Smeagol (talk) 14:54, 25 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Specifics!? IvarTheBoneless (talk) 12:16, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is, what on earth are you talking about? IvarTheBoneless (talk) 12:17, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Are you trolling me? There is a map referenced and I want to know where I can find it. What is your problem with that? Smeagol (talk) 18:32, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In the section of the Introduction to Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth that pertains to "A Description of the Island of Númenor", Christopher Tolkien wrote that he had "redrawn the map from a little rapid sketch" and that "the original shows another haven on the Bay of Andúnië, not far to the westward of Andúnië itself; the name is hard to read, but is almost certainly Almaida".Dour1234 (talk) 23:44, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi. Is the "little rapid sketch" available somewhere? Smeagol (talk) 10:26, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Frankly, I am surprised by your question if the rapid sketch is available somewhere. There is a link on the Almaida page if you click on "sketch-map of Númenor" that links to the Númenórë (map) page. On that page it says that the sketch-map was only published in the book Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth and that the sketch(-map) corresdonds to item no. 538 in the Tolkien Art Index. A click on the link to the Tolkien Art Index shows that the sketch-map of Númenor is item 63 on page 196 of the book Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth --Akhôrahil (talk) 18:04, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The linked map is the one published with Unfinished Tales, but not the rough sketch mentioned in the article. There are numerous sketches of lands from the legendarium that have changed significantly until they were finally published. Cf. sketches such as First Silmarillion Map or First Map of Lord of the Rings outside of publications. I am always on the hunt for such material. The textual reference in the article renders very little information.Smeagol (talk) 15:15, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I did not write that there is a link to the sketch-map on the Almaida page, I wrote that there is a link on the Almaida page if you click on "sketch-map of Númenor" that links ot the Númenórë (map) page. That means the "sketch-map of Númenor" text on the Almaida page links to the Númenórë (map) page. I also already provided the answer to you that the sketch-map of Númenor was published in the book Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth. So if you want to look at the map look in the book. If you do not want to spend the money to buy the book and if you wanted to look for someone who violated the copyright and uploaded it on the internet, then you should have specified in your original question what you were looking for. --Akhôrahil (talk) 11:07, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks to Dour I understand what you were talking about. You could've done the same but instead you accused me of 'trolling' you, even though I've no idea (since you've not specified) what exact reference I should've been looking for. IvarTheBoneless (talk) 12:35, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is because you did not bother to read the article and see where the quoted reference is from. Smeagol (talk) 13:49, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
