Rename?

I very much feel like moving this to The Appendices, since that's what they're called. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 22:05, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Hobbit Page References?

Is there any easy way of reconciling page references to The Hobbit from The Appendices? The Appendices footnotes often specify a specific edition of The Hobbit. Tolkien Gateway goes futher, with editions, then impressions. The page references within The Lord of the Rings itself are usually much less problematic as they usually edited during publication to match correctly within the same edition. My particular edition of LoTR (1997 HarperCollins paperback) refers to a second edition The Hobbit. A quick check on AbeBooks tells me 2nd edition is probably an order of magnitude out of my price range. So there doesn't seem to be any way for me to check up which page of The Hobbit is being referred to. Any suggestions? --User:Tanekaha 10:44, 29 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Great question! Long term, in conjunction with the Digital Tolkien Project, we plan on replacing our page number citations with the exact paragraph. This can then be converted to a page number of whatever edition you happen to have. More information is available on their Cite page and you can see Over Hill and Under Hill for an example. This system will also allow you to convert a page number from one edition to a page number in another edition. It's a very lengthy process, but is really exciting to finally move away from page numbers, which are even more problematic when using e-Books. You can also use Search to find the paragraph number of a specific phrase. Hyarion (talk) 23:26, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks User:Hyarion what a great reply! Though the gateway is still in the process of changing to paragraph references, the Search Tolkien resource you have pointed me to is good enough in the interim to find what I need. A quick search for 'Gondolin' for example found me everything I needed within The Hobbit. Thanks so much. And congratulations on (your part in) such an awesome wiki. I use it frequently as a reference. Tanekaha (talk) 02:10, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
