"Egladil" by John Howe
Egladil in The Lord of the Rings Online

The Egladil, or the Angle in Westron, was the name given by the people of Lórien to their lands between the courses of the rivers Anduin and Celebrant.[1] A part of the Naith, Egladil was the most populated part of the country, where the tree-city of Caras Galadhon was to be found.[2][3]

On 16 February T.A. 3019,[4] a parting feast was held there when the Fellowship of the Ring departed Lothlórien[5].

Etymology

Egladil is a Sindarin name, which means "Elven-point"[6] or "Angle"[1]. Paul Strack suggests that it is a combination of the prefixal form Egla- of Eglan ("Forsaken (Elf)") and the lenited form of til ("point", "spike", "(sharp) horn", "ending").[7]

Other versions of the legendarium

In earlier drafts to The Lord of the Rings, the location was named Nelennas and Nelen, sometimes glossed as "Gore", which was part of the larger Narthas.[8]

Other candidate, and more specific, names were Calennel and Calendil, which is translated as "Green-tine" or "Green-spit".[9]

Christopher Tolkien notes a confusing fluidity in how his father alternated the names and their meanings, regarding the larger "Angle" region between the rivers, and the specific "Tongue" at their confluence.[10]

Portrayal in adaptations

2008: The Lord of the Rings Online:

The name "Egladil" is specifically applied to the eastern area of Lothlorien, directly bordering by the Anduin.
