Possible turkish origin?[edit source]

I just noticed that "Rûm" is the same as the Turkish name for the Roman/Byzantine Empire, "Rûm". Anatolia was under the Sultanate of "Rûm". I don't know if there is a connection there or not.

The name is given in a list of real city names adapted to Gnomish and is compared to Gondolin, so not an empire. I don't think it refers to Constantinople (the "second Rome"), and Tolkien did not use Turkish sources, so definitely not. --LorenzoCB 18:28, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The only connection is that both derive from "Rome". There is no indication that Tolkien was aware of how Turks referred to the remnants of the Byzantine Empire. Other than that, it is therefore some expectable coincidence. Sage 07:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
