Underhill Reference
Thanks for your help on creating Underhill (house)! Do you happen to know which chapter you found the information in? That way we can add a reference on where the content comes from. We appreciate it! Hyarion (talk) 13:56, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- I see that I have to include referencing, but I don't know how that works. The Chapter is In the House of Tom Bombadil. Aenorean (talk) 14:02, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
- Don't worry, the references aspect is the hardest part, and once you've done it a few times it's easy. Help:References will cover the basics of how to add a reference. Because ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' is a common source we use, you'll find a link to the {{:FR}} template on that help page. When you click on that link, it will have more examples of how to insert a FotR reference. <ref>{{FR|Bombadil}}</ref> is what we'll want to add directly after the statement. That's it! If this happened to be the very first reference you were adding to an article, you would also just need to add {{References}} to the bottom of the article where you'd like the list of citations to be displayed, but this article already has that. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask, and thanks again for all your help! Hyarion (talk) 14:17, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
Importance of using references in edits
Welcome to Tolkien Gateway and thank you for your interest in improving the content on Tolkien Gateway. I noticed that you made a large number of edits including creating pages that redirect to other pages. It is very important for the quality of the content on Tolkien Gateway that references are added to statements. I did not remember if J.R.R. Tolkien used the term Kingdom of the South when I noticed that you had created a new page called Kingdom of the South that redirects to the Gondor page. In addition, the Other names section on the Gondor page did not include information that Kingdom of the South was another name for Gondor. It would have helped with checking the quality of your edit, if you would also have added that the Kingdom of the South was another name for Gondor in the Other names section on the Gondor page. In the meantime I already checked that Kingdom of the South was used by J.R.R. Tolkien and I already added the information to the Other names section of the Gondor page. --Akhôrahil (talk) 15:43, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
- I had added it because I was looking at the Index:Locations and filling in the red links. Beside Kingdom of the South stood (Gondor), so I thought I could just redirect.
- I strongly recommend to you never to assume that what is written in Tolkien Gateway is correct and never to make edits without having read the relevant sources by J.R.R. Tolkien immediately before the edit. A lot of information on Tolkien Gateway is still incorrect. In the case of your edit, you were lucky, because J.R.R. Tolkien did indeed use Kingdom of the South as a name for Gondor in the chapter Cirion and Eorl and the Friendship of Gondor and Rohan in the book Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth. He did not use that name in The Lord of the Rings, so a lot of people may not be familiar with this name and may not even enter this name as a search term. --Akhôrahil (talk) 13:16, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Suri-kyla etc
As concepts like Suri-kyla are not very notable as adaptation articles, I suggest you add this information in the "Portrayal in adaptations" section in Forochel or Lossoth. Sage (talk) 16:03, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
