History
He rode to the relief of Minas Tirith with his Lord in the War of the Ring, and there fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where he was slain. He fell with the banner in his hand, and it had to be taken from him after death to be given to Éomer. He also earned himself a mention in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg.[1]
Etymology
In Old English Guþláf means "survivor of the battle" (consisting of gūþ + lāf).[2]

2013: The Lord of the Rings Online:
- Guthláf has been dismissed from his duty as Théoden's banner-bearer by Gríma and had return home, protecting the lumber camp near the village of Imping in Eastfold. After the Battle of Helm's Deep Guthláf is restored in his duties by the King and rides south to Gondor at his side. Player next meets him in the Druadan Forest, from where the Rohirrim set out for the Pelennor Fields. Guthláf is killed when the Witch-king of Angmar attacks King Théoden.
