Snails

I pity snails, and all that carry their homes on their backs.

Snails were gastropods, noted for their low speed.^[2] There were exceptionally large ones around Erebor, one of which fell victim to a thrush, as observed by Bilbo and Balin.^[3] Most of them did not survive the onset of Smaug.^[4]
