Brook of Glass

From Tolkien Gateway

The Brook of Glass was a stream near Tavrobel in Tol Eressëa, according to the early version of the legendarium in one of the outlines for the continuation of The Book of Lost Tales.[1]

It was close to the Heath of the Sky-roof, a site of a great battle during the Faring Forth, when the Elves of Tol Eressëa attempted to rescue their kin living in the Great Lands.[1] In the aftermath of the battle, Eriol the mariner stole away from the war-torn heath, and fled down the valley of the river - however, the waters of the stream were "fouled with the war of men and grime of strife".[1]

Inspiration

According to John Garth, the Brook of Glass might have been inspired by the Sher Brook near Cannock Chase, not far from the village of Great Haywood, which served as the main inspiration behind the town of Tavrobel.[2]
