The Gaudrim were Easterling mercenaries[1] from Rhûn who served the Dark Wizard in the late Second Age. The Gaudrim were invented for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power by Amazon Studios. They appeared in the second season of the series.

History

While in the service of the Dark Wizard who dwelt in Caras Gaer, the Gaudrim, led by Brânk, pursued and attempted to capture the Stranger as well as the Harfoots Nori Brandyfoot and Poppy Proudfellow. They were unsuccessful after the Stranger magically conjured a sandstorm which caused the Gaudrim to flee.

The Gaudrim scouts later come upon the Stoor village and find both Nori and Poppy staying there. Brânk captured the two Harfoots and, while demanding his payment for their capture, threatened Nori's life while the Dark Wizard was attempting to persuade the Stranger to join him. The Dark Wizard used his magic to push Brânk against rock wall where a jagged branch dug into the back of the Gaudrim's head, appearing to kill him.

His apparent death showed the Dark Wizard's aptitude for violence and caused the Stranger to refuse to fall in league the Dark Wizard. The fate of the rest of the Gaudrim riders is unknown.

Characteristics

The Gaudrim all don metallic masks and long robes that collectively obscure all of their skin and features due to a curse that the Dark Wizard put on their flesh.

Etymology

The term Gaudrim is never glossed in the series or by its creator, but it is probably Sindarin, from gaud ("contrivance, machine")[2] and the suffix -rim (a general or group plural ending).[3]
