Kemen was a Númenórean noble and the son of Chancellor Pharazôn during the Second Age. Kemen was invented for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power by Amazon Studios, and he was portrayed by Leon Wadham.[1]
History
Kemen is first seen alerting his father that a crowd is gathering, angered by Queen Regent Míriel’s apparent favoritism toward Galadriel, an Elf. Pharazôn seizes the moment to strengthen his political standing, and after his speech, Kemen encounters Eärien, daughter of Elendil. He later reconnects with her and takes her out after helping her clean floors at the Builder’s Guild.
When Míriel declares that Númenor will send troops to Middle-earth, Eärien urges Kemen to persuade his father to stop the mission, fearing heavy casualties. Though hesitant, Kemen approaches Pharazôn and learns of his broader ambitions—using the campaign to launch an era of expansion and wealth. Unconvinced, Kemen secretly boards one of the departing ships at night, intending to sabotage it. There, he unexpectedly encounters Isildur, who is trying to stow away. When Isildur realizes Kemen’s plan, he intervenes, but the attempt goes wrong: a fire ignites the ship’s oil reserves, causing an explosion that destroys two vessels. Despite this, Isildur saves Kemen by pulling him to safety, an act Kemen later acknowledges with gratitude.
After Númenor’s forces return and Pharazôn claims the throne as Ar-Pharazôn, he orders the destruction of a burial temple to make way for an aqueduct, assigning Kemen to oversee it. At the site, Elendil and Valandil are mourning the presumed deaths of Isildur and Ontamo. Kemen’s disrespectful behavior toward them and a priest present provokes Valandil into attacking him. During the struggle, Kemen attempts to drown Valandil, but Valandil breaks free, disarms him, and injures him. Though Valandil initially prepares to kill Kemen, Elendil persuades him to stand down. As Valandil turns away, Kemen seizes the moment—grabbing his sword and fatally stabbing him.
Later, Kemen commands a new expedition to Middle-earth, landing at Pelargir and converting the Númenórean settlement into a military stronghold under his leadership. The troops under him are aligned with the King’s Men. He demands timber from the neraby areas in exchange for winter provisions, disregarding prior promises made to the Ents not to fell trees—thereby creating tension and setting the stage for future conflict.
Etymology
The name Kemen directly comes from the Quenya word kemen ("earth").
