Biographical Information
LocationArtanor
Physical Description
GenderFemale

Nielthi was the "Handmaid of Gwendelin"[1] who was briefly mentioned in an earlier stage of Tolkien's legendarium, in the tale of The Nauglafring.[2]

While Tinwelint was out celebrating the anniversary of the Hunting of the Wolf, Gwendelin sat foreboding. When Nielthi, an Elfmaid, asked her why she was sorrowful at such an occasion, Gwendelin responded that she could feel evil seeking their land, and that her days in Artanor were "speeding to their end". Nielthi attempted to reassure the queen by stating that they should not fear because the great magic woven about them would surely protect them. In response, Gwendelin claimed that, to her, there seemed to be "a rat that" gnawed "the threads and all the web" had "come unwoven".[2]

At that moment, "there was a cry about the doors" and many Orcs and Indrafangs burst in, as they were sacking Artanor. The fate of Nielthi is unknown.[2]

Etymology

Nielthi is presumed to be a Gnomish name on Eldamo.[3] The name might be a combination of niel ("granddaughter")[4] and -thi ("noun suffix")[5].
