Brethil by Matěj Čadil

Birches were smooth-barked forest trees that grew in the Shire[1], Dimrill Dale[2], Fangorn Forest[3], and Emyn Muil.[4]

The Sindarin word for "birch" was hwinn, while in Quenya was hwindë.[5]

A "silver birch" in Sindarin was known as brethil.[6][7] This consequently gave its name to the Forest of Brethil.

Portrayal in adaptations

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Wood of this tree can be foraged by Westfold foresters in Enedwaith, Dunland, and near the the Great River.[8]
