Lammoth, the "Great Echo", was a shoreland region far to the northwest of Beleriand, north of Drengist and west of the Ered Lómin.[1] It was where Ungoliant set upon Morgoth in an attempt to gain the Silmarils. As Morgoth was being strangled he cried out in anguish and the echoes of this shout remained in the land thereafter. His cry was heard by the Balrogs from Angband who came and rescued their lord from the great spider.[2][3]
After the first moonrise, when the host of Fingolfin arrived in Middle-earth after crossing the Grinding Ice,[2][4] the Battle of the Lammoth was fought here between the Noldor and a large host of Orcs as the Elves marched southwards to enter into Hithlum, resulting in a crushing defeat for Morgoth. However, Argon, the third son of Fingolfin, perished in that combat.[5]
Etymology
A Sindarin word, a combination of lamm ("echo", related with lóm as in Dor Lómin) with the augmentative suffix -oth.[6]
