"When little Louis came to stay"[1] was the first line of an untitled epistolary poem that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien.[2][3][4][5]

When little Louis came to stay
his thanks in verse he used to say,
and turn a graceful compliment,
which by return of post he sent.*
This custom all should imitate
on whom a lively muse doth wait.[1]
