Ancrene Wisse: The English Text of the Ancrene Riwle is an edition of the 13th-century religious text Ancrene Wisse by J.R.R. Tolkien, originally published by Oxford University Press in 1962, at the commission of the Early English Text Society.
Ancrene Wisse (sometimes also Ancrene Riwle) is early Middle English for "Anchoresses' Guide", it is a guide or set of rules on the lives of female religious recluses. There are several surviving manuscripts of this text, one of the most important of which is known as "MS CCCC 402",[note 1] which was especially interested by Tolkien, and was the basis for this volume.
The book contains an introduction by N.R. Ker and a prefatory note by Tolkien, the main text is in Middle English, untranslated. It also presents on frontispiece two pages from the "MS CCCC 402" manuscript.
It was reprinted in 1997 in the original hardcover, and again in 2013 in white paperbacks.
