Atanatar II (Q, pron. [aˈtanatar]; T.A. 977[1] – 1226, aged 249 years) was the sixteenth King of Gondor. He was known as Atanatar II Alcarin ("Glorious"; pron. [ˈalkarin]).[2]
History[edit | edit source]
He succeeded his father Hyarmendacil I in T.A. 1149 when Gondor had reached its greatest power and largest extent. Atanatar lived in ease and splendour, such that people said "precious stones are pebbles in Gondor for children to play with." The King loved luxury and it was during his reign that the original Crown of Gondor was replaced by a jewelled helm.[3] However, due to the King's indolence nothing was done to maintain the power that his ancestors had built and the watch upon Mordor was neglected.[4]
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Atanatar is Quenya. It means "Father of Men".[5] It is a compound of Atan ("Man") and atar ("father").[6]
The sobriquet Alcarin is Quenya. It means "the Glorious".[7][8]
