Beregond (Third Age 2700[1] – 2811,[2] aged 111 years) was the twentieth Ruling Steward of Gondor[3].

History

Before Beregond became a Ruling Steward, three great fleets[4] of the Corsairs[5] that had been long prepared came from Umbar and Harad and attacked the coasts of Gondor in great numbers[4]. The invaders landed in many places,[4] including the mouth of the river Lefnui,[5] as far north as the mouth of the river Isen[4] before winter in T.A. 2758[5]. At the same time Rohan was invaded from the east[5] by Eastern invaders[6] and from the west[4] by the Dunlendings led by Wulf and by Corsairs that had landed at the mouths of the rivers Lefnui and Isen[5]. Because of the attacks on its coasts Gondor could not send an army to help Rohan.[5] Before the beginning of spring in T.A. 2759 Beregond had defeated the invaders in Gondor.[4] After his victory he immediatly sent an army to help Rohan,[4] which came to Rohan by the roads east and west of the mountains and the Dunlendings were driven from Rohan and from Isengard before the end of the year[6]. Beregond was the greatest captain in Gondor since Boromir, the son of Steward Denethor I of Gondor. Because Rohan had been weakened by the invasions and would need more time to recover, Beren welcomed Saruman and gave the keys of Orthanc to him in T.A. 2759.[4]

Beregond became the twentieth Ruling Steward at the death of his father, Steward Beren in T.A. 2763.[7]

During Beregond's rule, the War of the Dwarves and Orcs was fought (T.A. 2793 - 2799). Only rumours of the fighting came south until Orcs fleeing from the Battle of Nanduhirion crossed Rohan and established themselves in the White Mountains. Fighting occurred in many dales before the danger was ended.[8]

Beregond ruled as Steward for fortyeight years,[2] and was succeeded by his son, Belecthor II.[9].

Etymology

Beregond is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull suggest that it means "Valiant Stone" and that the name is a combination of the beren ("bold") and gond ("stone").[10] David Salo suggests that it could mean "fierce stone" and that it is a combination of bereg and gond.[11][12]

Beregond was probably named after a renowned heroe in the royal lines of old as recorded in legend.[13]
