Belegorn (Third Age 2074[1] – 2204,[2] aged 130 years) was the fourth Ruling Steward of Gondor[3].
History
Belegorn became the fourth Ruling Steward at the death of his father, Steward Herion in T.A. 2148.[4]
Belegorn's rule was a quiet time for Gondor during the Watchful Peace,[5] when Sauron was in the East and the Nazgûl stayed quiet in Minas Morgul[6].
Belegorn ruled as Steward for fiftysix years,[2] and was succeeded by his son, Húrin I.[7].
Etymology
Belegorn is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests it means "Great-tree" and is a compound of beleg ("great", "mighty", "large", "big") and orn ([tall] "tree").[8]
Belegorn was probably named after a renowned heroe in the royal lines of old as recorded in legend.[9][10]
